A man and woman rendered in bent, welded steel rod — his capped profile and buttoned coat drawn in a few continuous loops, her arm resting along the seat back beside him. Beneath them, the seat fans out into radial wire tines; the legs curve into looping, floral supports. Matte black finish, evenly cured with no rust or pitting; joints tight throughout.
John Risley, a sculptor by training, made these wire "figure" pieces at his California studio from the 1950s–60s, letting the material stay legible as line — furniture that reads as much as line-drawing as seating. The couple motif is the most recognized of his figures: two silhouettes holding down a room like sculpture that happens to seat you.
