A reamer, pitcher, and three tumblers in Hotta Yu Shoten’s basket-weave majolica, molded in relief with lemons, leaves, and citrus blossom, then hand-painted in vivid color with orange-banded rims and a striped rope handle. The reamer lifts away to reveal the pitcher beneath, designed to catch the juice.
Hotta Yu Shoten produced hand-decorated Japanese ceramics for the American market between 1920 and 1947. These were everyday objects, made to be used, and most were. Finding the pitcher, reamer, and original tumblers still together nearly a century later is increasingly unusual.
Crazed throughout with age, with staining to the crackle and pitcher interior.
