A late 19th-century opaline glass inkwell, French or Bohemian, made around 1885 at the height of Europe’s fascination with Japanese decorative arts.
The square body is blown in a spiraling mold, with the glass graduating from deep terracotta at the shoulder to warm ivory at the base. Across all four sides, a flowering prunus branch is painted by hand, each blossom outlined in raised gilt with tiny gilt-dot stamens. The decoration reflects the Japonisme that swept through European design after the great Paris exhibitions of the period.
The inkwell retains its gilt-brass hinged collar, original clear glass liner, and matching swirl-molded ball lid. Unsigned, as is common with enamelled opaline glass of this type.
In very good, entirely original condition, with light surface wear, some rubbing to the gilding, and gentle patina to the brass mount. No cracks or restoration.
