Our Founder's Box: Richard Christensen of Flamingo Estate
Richard Christensen grew up on a farm in rural Australia, surrounded by bees, sugarcane, and the kind of beauty that only comes from paying close attention to the natural world. He went on to build one of the most celebrated creative agencies in the world, working with luxury houses and global brands. He was very good at it. And then the pandemic happened.
In the spring of 2020, a farmer he knew was about to lose everything. Her vegetables went to restaurants, and the restaurants had all closed. Richard told her to bring the produce over. That first Friday, they sold 300 boxes. The weekend after, 600. The weekend after that, 1,200. And it just kept going.
He had spent decades making luxury feel beautiful. Now he was doing the same thing for a head of lettuce — and it turned out that was exactly right. Mother Nature, he'll tell you, is the last great luxury house. The farm boxes became Flamingo Estate. The network grew to over 125 regenerative farms. And the pink house in the hills of Los Angeles became something much bigger than a house.
This week, Richard has also finished his latest book, Pleasure Principles: An Almanac from the Garden — part field guide, part art book, and part love letter to the natural world, moving month by month through the garden with stories, recipes, rituals, and practical wisdom for anyone who wants to live a little closer to the earth.
