For years, we have dreamed of making Imprisoned Pears the French way. Rooted in the Loire Valley’s orchard lines and artisanal lore, the Poire Prisonnière is a Pear that grows inside its own bottle — ripening in glass before being cradled in brandy — a quiet act of suspended nature.

First practiced by artisans around Olivet, a small, historic commune in north-central France — one of the country’s most storied fruit-growing regions — and later showcased at Paris’s 1889 Exposition Universelle, it became a symbol of craft, terroir, and quiet elegance.

We’ve resurrected that delight for the Holidays: one golden Pear, still whole, gently suspended in Pear brandy. To make ours, we carefully fasten glass bottles over young Pears, tying them to the branches above. The fruit grows entirely within the bottle until harvest in August. The bottle is then filled with Pear brandy — grown and distilled for us by the fermentation masters at Opolo Vineyards — and left to rest for over a year.

The result is a true treasure: a rich liqueur that’s bold and aromatic, with a whisper of Vanilla. Though it carries a hint of sweetness, it remains dry, pure, and dynamic — capturing the creamy brightness of the Pear and making for a perfect post-dinner sip.
