Jessie and Ana Smith, lead the exceptional team at White Buffalo Land Trust, a group of active land stewards, researchers, educators, and leaders committed to reimagining agriculture. They quite literally make their home and job their life at Jalama Canyon Ranch - 1,000 acres of living laboratory in Santa Barbara County devoted to the adoption of Regenerative Agriculture. Our partnership has grown into an evolving collaboration and exchange of ideas, ingredients, farms, and more.
One of the ecological sites at Jalama Canyon is rolling hillsides of native Sages, and we knew right away we wanted to work together to distill this special Sage and bring the magic of Jalama Canyon to our beloved soaps. We pinched off leaves of sun-warmed Black Sage, Hummingbird Sage, and California Sagebrush as brilliant white clouds passed rapidly above us, their movement driven by coastal breezes. Expansive views of rolling hills dotted with ancient Oak Trees dripping in Moss — this is an experience in the true abundance of California. Black Sage is traditionally used by the Chumash to relieve pain and soothe. It’s wild harvested and distilled on site throughout the season. Early Spring harvests bring out the sweet, herbaceous notes, with a background of damp earth. Late Summer harvests, when the plant is strengthening itself against the threat of fire, are oil rich and highly camphorous.
